Journal Entry #4

Today in class we partnered up with a fellow classmate to discuss our project ideas. The student had to be someone we did not know or someone that did not know what our project was about. The person I partnered up with was Matt Eaton. Matt's capstone project is going to be a board game where players will tell stories. The board game is apart of a much bigger project collaboration with five other group members. Some of the features of the project includes a website and a live version game experience. Matt's main portion of the project is the board game. The idea of this project is to make a game that helps facilitate the use of your imagination through storytelling. With the excessive amount of video games and movies, people are losing touch with the use of their imagination. This project will create a total interactive experience for the audience. The target audience for this project is 12-25 year olds. The game is simple enough for anyone to use, but complex enough for people to stay intrigued by it.

Journal Entry #3 Passion and the 7'ps

After applying the 7p’s to my concept for my capstone project, I realized a few things. One thing that I noticed was that the further I tried to explain my concept, the more vague it became which became very confusing to me.  I also realized that my passion for what I wanted to do became less and less clear.  The enthusiasm was gone as well too; you can start to tell that I just started to write just to have something down. I think the best way to put passion into my project is to really sit and think of what it is I want to do. I said I wanted to make a difference in the world. I want to change society through digital media. But I need to figure out what exactly I want to change, who it is I want to reach, and how I want to reach them. I think once I figure that out then planning my project will become easier and maintain my passion and excitement. It is hard to be passionate about something when you do not necessarily know what it is to be passionate about. I think if I started to really dig deeper and find my inspiration, then I can find my passion and the way I want to share it with the world.

The 7 P's Framework

The 7 P’s Framework:

I am still unsure on what to do for my project, however I do have a vague description of what the general purpose is going to be.

Purpose: to link digital media and community service together that will inspire the community of Indy

Product: This project will be a collaborative project with a nonprofit organization that will connect, motivate, and promote discovery.  How? I am not sure just yet

People: group members, a nonprofit organization within Indy, other
Group members will be conducting all research needed to collaborate with nonprofit organization, as well as collect data after collaboration to create final product. The nonprofit organization and participants will be whom we collaborate with to implement project and provide feedback.

Process: time, nonprofit organization facilities, Internet, computer, adobe software, resources (data), and money

Pitfalls: not having enough time, miscommunication or ineffective or failed partnership with nonprofit organization. Backups-possibly having a backup organization to work with, or different ideas or methods we can use just in case others do not work
Prep: research and brainstorm our project ideas, research and choose a nonprofit organization to work with, choose a medium that will help us to showcase our work

Practical Concerns: We still do not have a clear understanding of what we want to do for our project. We have an idea of what general accomplishment we want it to make. We also want it to inspire and have a positive effect on the community. We hope researching and brainstorming will not take up the time we need actually need to create our project.

Journal Entry #1 1/8/13

Today was a very interesting and informative day. We talked a lot about what the objectives of the class are so I learned that this was no longer a preparatory capstone class. I also learned for the first time that capstone proposals were due the semester before graduation during midterms, which was kind of scary. We discussed a lot about how we begin brainstorming ideas by first finding out a problem and thinking of a possible solution. This technique was very helpful for me because I am still unsure on what exactly I want to do for my capstone project. After going around the room, introducing ourselves and speaking on our goals for taking this class, I found out there were still other students whom were also still unsure on what they wanted to do for their capstones. It was kind of a relief to find out that I was not the only person that still needed to work out an idea. Overall, what I learned most in class today was that graduation is right around the corner and I need to get the ball rolling in planning my capstone project.
